WordPress maintenance checklist for business websites
A practical routine for backups, updates, security checks, forms, performance and content without treating maintenance as a single update click.

Maintain backups of both files and the database, store copies away from the live server and confirm that a responsible person can restore them. A backup that has never been checked is not yet a proven recovery plan.
Use a staging copy for high-impact plugin, theme, PHP or WooCommerce changes. Record what changed and keep a rollback path before applying updates to a production website.
Update, then test business-critical paths
Review WordPress core, plugins and themes regularly. Remove software the site no longer uses, and check support and compatibility before major changes. WordPress documentation recommends backing up before an update so the site can be restored if something goes wrong.
After changes, test the homepage, important service or product pages, menus, search, forms, email delivery, WhatsApp links, account login and checkout where applicable. A successful update message does not prove that these customer journeys still work.
Review performance, content and ownership
Check mobile loading, broken links, expired information, user accounts, error logs and storage growth. Update opening hours, services, prices and team details when the business changes. Monitor Search Console for indexing issues instead of assuming every published page is visible.
Assign owners for hosting, domains, renewals, backups, updates, content approval and emergency contact. A short documented routine reduces the risk of missed renewals and unclear access during an incident.
